Seagate updates FreeAgent media hub

Seagate today spun an important update to its FreeAgent networked media players. The FreeAgent Theater+ HD increases the maximum resolution for video to 1080p and adds support for DTS audio on top of Dolby Digital. Additionally, it now becomes networkable through an Ethernet jack that lets it stream content from other computers on the local network.

An optional 802.11n Wi-Fi adapter for one of the three available USB ports will give it a wireless link.

Like the earlier FreeAgent Theater HD, the Theater+ centers on a docking bay that plays most common music, photo and video formats from a FreeAgent Go drive, with a TV-optimized interface and remote for control. Spare USB ports can also be used to attach extra storage beyond just Seagate's own disks as well as to attach a Mac or Windows PC. It outputs its full resolution picture through HDMI, but component and RCA outputs exist to relay analog video.

Shipments start today and include either a driveless kit for $150 or else one with a 500GB FreeeAgent Go for $290. The wireless add-on comes next month and will cost $70.
