E-book sales outpace hardcover after release
Dan Brown's latest book, The Lost Symbol, has sold more copies from Amazon as an e-book than a hardcover, according to Kindle Nation Daily. The trend may not continue for much longer, as the Kindle edition was released this morning and the ranking is updated hourly. The hardcover version, however, has been available to pre-order for several weeks.
Amazon's desire to keep Kindle sales private has lead some analysts to believe the devices are not selling as well as the company had hoped. Steve Jobs recently made a similar accusation, while arguing that the device costs too much for a single function.
Even if the e-book version of The Lost Symbol doesn't stay at the top for much longer, it has temporarily outsold every other book, electronic or print, in the entire Amazon library. What this means for the Kindle is unclear, as an unknown portion of the sales would have been made on an iPhone or iPod touch using Amazon's free app.
