Audiovox, FLO TV to offer TV shows in cars

Audiovox has partnered up with FLO TV to bring the latter's live mobile TV service to cars, the two companies announced on Thursday. FLO TV (formerly MedaiFLO) was offered to mobile phone subscribers, and the new service, called FLO TV Auto Entertainment, will be offered before the end of 2009 through 12,000 new car dealers. Audiovox will supply the hardware to enable this, including a small antenna that is no bigger than a human hand.

Audiovox president Tom Malone says the service will offer better quality and more content choice than any similar service, adding that popular TV shows will be available. Audiovox' Advent hardware will be exclusively available at new car dealers, consisting of a standalone system with screens up to 10.5 inches, or can be added to existing in-car entertainment systems. While detail programming information is unknown, FLO TV promises to bring top-rated entertainment, news, sports and children's programming.

One-year subscriptions will be offered for free with the purchase of the hardware, with a one-year plan initially priced at $119, while three-year subscriptions starting at $299. Dealers will be able to work the system cost into the price of a new car. Before the end of 2010, Audiovox and FLO TV will offer the service in electronics retail stores in addition to dealerships.

The service is not available in all areas, and full maps can be seen at FLO TV's website.
