Sprint 4G WiMax in Chicago on Oct. 6th

Sprint will sell its 4G WiMAX mobile broadband service to Chicago residents starting on October 6th, when it will officially be announced during a press event. A Friday story from BBR maintains Sprint has been sending out invitations to members of the press for the event, where it will demonstrate the network's speeds in addition to formally launching the network.

Sprint's rollout of the 4G service, which it has purchased from Clear and its ClearWire network, had been promised for Chicago and other markets since early August. No other details were given.

The service as in other areas should theoretically allow peak 12Mbps peak download speeds, though real-world testing from Sprint reveals transfers in the 2-4Mbps range. Sprint claims it's twice as fast as practical 3G speeds.
