Xbox 360 Elite now $250 after rebate

Microsoft surprised gamers Tuesday morning with word of an Xbox 360 Elite rebate (link active soon). The deal gives buyer of the 120GB game system a $50 mail-in discount that effectively brings the price of the system down to $250, or the same price as the Nintendo Wii. It lasts only until October 6th.

The company hasn't explained the reason for the temporary price drop, though it arrives just as Microsoft is shipping Halo 3: ODST and after market data has shown the PS3 outselling the Xbox due both to its redesign and its added features for the price. It also potentially improves the value of the base console versus the upcoming 250GB special edition for Modern Warfare 2.
