Apple set to refresh entry-level MacBook ahead of schedule?

Device expected to retain polycarbonate housing

Apple may be set to release an update to its entry-level MacBook sooner than analysts initially anticipated, an unnamed source told Apple Insider. Several recent reports suggest the company is preparing to launch new MacBooks and iMacs.

Although rumors remain unconfirmed, the company is not expected to diverge from the polycarbonate housing construction of the current models. The form is said to be thinner, potentially indicating the device will utilize an internal battery design similar to the new MacBook Pro offerings. Analysts suggest the device may feature smoothed or rounded edges, which would also follow the design evolution of the aluminum-unibody MacBooks.

Apple currently holds a strong position in the market for high-end devices, while battling Microsoft's ad campaign that labels Macs as overpriced. Many speculate the company will lower the cost of the basic MacBook, as it has with the MacBook Pros introduced this year. How far the price will drop below $1000, however, remains uncertain.
