New Verizon handsets offer variety

Verizon Wireless has introduced three new handsets recently, including the Motorola Barrage, Verizon Razzle and Nokia Shade. The Barrage is the most unique as a ruggedized flip phone that meets the MIL-SPEC standard for resistance to submersion in water for up to 30 minutes as well as humidity, shock, vibration and exposure to sun. It otherwise has push-to-talk functionality and integrates a 2-megapixel camera.

Users can access Verizon's VZ Navigator turn-by-turn, V CAST Music with Rhapsody, and V Cast Video on Demand services on the handset's 2.2-inch main screen. The music can play music files, which are stored on an external microSDHC memory card, with up to 16GB capacities supported.

The Verizon Razzle is a PCD-built candybar with a swiveling bottom that has an alphanumeric keypad on one side and a full-QWERTY keyboard on the other. It has a 2.2-inch display, a 1.3-megapixel camera, and Bluetooth support. The feature phone can access the web, the VZ Navigator service and V CAST Music as well. Songs can be saved onto external microSD cards, with a 1GB card included with the handset.

The third new handset is Nokia's 2705 Shade, which becomes one of Verizon's smallest handsets. It will be offered in a version with a 1.3-megapixel camera, and one without. Verizon and other retailers will offer Xpress-on color covers for the device, allowing users to customize its appearance to their tastes. Both versions share Bluetooth functionality, with sync and charging done thanks to a microUSB port.

The Verizon Barrage is now available, priced at $130 after a two-year contract and a $50 mail-in rebate. A version without a camera will be available on October 21st. The Razzle will be available from Verizon's online store on October 6th for $70 after a two-year contract. The Nokia Shade will be exclusively sold online for a limited time starting October 6th, with users opting for a camera-equipped model receiving a free purple Xpress-on cover and a picture frame lanyard. The Nokia 2705 Shade will cost $30 on a two-year contract.
