Omnia II at Verizon may keep Win Mo 6.1

Samsung's Omnia II when it reaches Verizon may not use Windows Mobile 6.5 like the HTC Imagio, a detailed rumor said late Wednesday. A source that also correctly detailed the Imagio claimed the Omnia II would ship in mid-October, shortly after Windows Mobile 6.5 will be available, but will instead ship with an older Windows Mobile 6.1 release instead. The WMExperts contact didn't explain why this would be but cautioned that the modern OS would only come through a firmware update a significant amount of time after the phone is ready.

The US carrier would be using the earlier release even though other carriers are launching their versions of the Omnia II with 6.5. It's also believed that Verizon won't be aggressive and may wait for Samsung to introduce the phone first. Its cosmetic appearance is also believed to have changed slightly from the last official shots (seen here).

The Omnia II will partly compete with the Imagio as both have an 800x480 touchscreen as well as 3G, a 5-megapixel camera, GPS and Wi-Fi. In place of the TouchFLO interface and TV turner, however, Samsung's Windows Mobile entry will use TouchWiz and a higher-color AMOLED display.
