QuickTime 7.6.4 causing playback problems on Windows?

updated 10:35 pm EDT, Thu October 1, 2009

Users reporting no video, just audio

A number of reports on Apple's Support pages suggest the latest QuickTime update, v7.6.4, has been causing problems on Windows machines. Many users attempting to play embedded videos can only hear the sound, while the video content is left blank.

"During our latest demo, no videos uploaded to the demo system would play in *any* Windows browser, proving to the naysayers the misguided but prevalent belief that Macs don't work with Windows," says MacNN reader Chris Brewer. He had attempted to demonstrate XServes, Snow Leopard and Podcast Producer in a cross-platform environment. "I was utterly befuddled, because it has worked in every pilot I've run, on both Mac OS and Windows."

Several threads on Apple's forums are filled with similar reports. The QuickTime update appears to work properly on Macs, indicating the issue is specific to Windows systems. Users are also claiming the lack of video is experienced with both XP and Vista, along with Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome browsers.

A cause for the problem still remains unclear, however an Apple representative allegedly told forum poster DarrelP that it is a known issue related to the security features in the latest version. Several users have worked around the problem by downloading the videos and watching them in QuickTime instead of using the browser plug-in. Meanwhile, the majority of users experiencing the problems are waiting for follow-up Software Update to address the issue.

It's service pack 3 under XP

As a developer myself, I tracked it to the latest SPs which work fine with previous versions of QT, but not the latest version. OTOH, the latest version of QT works fine if you don't have the latest SPs...

    I'm sorry

But an application not working under Windows is 'news'? Shouldn't it be the other way around....
