Acer Liquid carries Android 1.6
Acer on Wednesday made a new claim to the fastest smartphone available with the Liquid. The company's first Android phone, it's one of the first to ship with Android 1.6 but is also the first Android phone to ship with a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Using the 1GHz chip makes it faster than the 800MHz Samsung Moment and helps drive the 800x480 touchscreen as well as speed up 3D and Android's already accurate web browser.
Despite being new to Android, Acer claims a fully customized interface with better shortcuts to media and web links, a much more advanced camera interface that supports ISO sensitivity changes and geotagging, and a custom Spinlets app for streaming music and video. Like Palm's Synergy, social networking is directly integrated with the contact list and merges not just Facebook and Twitter but also media sharing services like Flickr, Picasa and YouTube.
The Liquid unusually hasn't received full specifications and hasn't been given a release date or price, though Acer has previously promised that it would ship its first Android phone before the end of the year.
Rumors have circulated that Acer ultimately plans to drop most Windows Mobile phones in favor of Android starting next year but are as yet unconfirmed.

pretty sweet
Looks like a very interesting handset. This announcement, combined with the story above of Apple upping the ante in the iPhone Jailbreak game, makes me wonder where the Android market will be once my 3Gs contract expires in almost two years. If Acer is already releasing kit like this soon, I'm sure I'll have some great options to choose from at that point. Android is easy as pie to jailbreak, and I know Acer won't give a cr_p what software I install on there. Apple's got about as long as my current contract to pull their head out of their collective arse and let people run whatever software they want, or Acer and other Android vendors will be looking very good to me. Even 11 pages of mediocre games aren't going to keep me tied to the iPhone platform if I can't do anything interesting with it.
