Canon EOS 1D Mark V due tomorrow?

Canon 1D MkV may use crop frame, 1080p60

Canon's long rumored replacement for its EOS 1D Mark III pro DSLR could show as early as tomorrow but with multiple surprises in store, more than one source said today. A post from pro photographer Philip Bloom as well as an unnamed source for Canon Rumors both say Canon will use events celebrating the 50th anniversary of its DSLRs to unveil the EOS 1D Mark V, skipping IV due to Japanese viewing it as an unlucky number. Controversially, it would also opt for a crop-frame sensor instead of full-frame, opting for a 16-megapixel image so it can reach a maximum shooting rate of 11 or possibly 12 frames per second.

The effect on lenses would be mitigated by a relatively low 1.3X crop factor, and in return the camera may have other advantages of its own: it may be the first DSLR to shoot 1080p video at 60 frames per second, one of the tips says. The 19-point autofocusing system of the EOS 7D and some ergonomic changes may also make their way into the camera. Whether or not the light sensitivity will increase to combat the Nikon D3s isn't known but is likely given improvements in recent Canon cameras.

The Mark V is unofficially predicted to cost about $5,000 in its usual body-only package and would ship by late November.

"50th anniversary of its DSLRs"? it should probably read SLR as they would definitely not have digital models 50 years ago.

Cropped frame in their flagship camera?

Seriously? A cropped sensor in a $5K DSLR? That doesn't sound right.

I though the exact same thing. I mean it's only a 1.3x instead of the 1.6x, but still seems a bit out there. Especially since the 5D is full frame.

Do you all know anything about Canon DSLRs?

The 1D series has always had 1.3x crops to get higher burst for sports shooting. The 1Ds series has been their full frame flagship. Nothing controversial about continuing what they have been doing for 3 product generations.

You guys need a fact checker.

Not the flagship

As ddrmxgt37 wrote, the 1Ds is the flagship camera (for studio use) and is always full frame. The 1D is the flagship sports camera (fastest frame-rate and has always been a 1.3x crop to also help distance shooting -- say from off-field at a game.) There's nothing controversial about this.

Also, as maxK pointed out, 50th Anniversary of SLR camera, not dSLR (unless you really think there were Cannon digital cameras 50 years ago)
