Microsoft retail opening mimic Apple's

Scottsdale MS store copies Apple opening

Microsoft today opened its promised first Microsoft Store in Scottsdale, Arizona, marking its first significant effort in retail beyond experiments. The store matches leaked presentations showing a bright, spacious design resembling Apple stores and is now known to more directly imitate Apple in its staff and openings. As shown in an official video (available below), staff wear shirts in Windows-themed colors and, in today's launch, were grouped in lines to cheer the first customers entering the store.

The company claims a successful launch with lineups that extended outside of the Fashion Square mall and crowded the store afterwards. The store includes both Windows PCs as well as Windows Mobile smartphones, Xbox 360 consoles and Zune HD players.

Microsoft plans to launch a second store in Mission Viejo, California in one week's time and is counting on retail to restore its public image, which it believes has been hurt by Vista and to a lesser extent Windows Mobile. Apple's retail strategy is often credited with helping to fuel iPod, Mac and eventually iPhone sales as it gave customers an opportunity to try products in an ideal environment where third-party stores often have limited displays.

    1st hand report

The microsoft opening was a big waste of 18 hours! It was a bust, they promoted giving $500+ in each gift bag, we got $25 gift card, water container mints and chapstick! Even Microsoft personell came out over the night saying how awesome the gift bags were and what a treat we were gonna get, only to get the cheap stuff that high schoolers get on the back to class day! I will not be shopping at the store for their disgusting appreciation to there customers!!

    Details?

So what can you buy there in terms of PC hardware? Are they selling Dells and VAIOs and random other stuff just like a BestBuy?

I hear one of the big reasons for the long wait is there is a store rep every couple feet who asks:

"Are you sure you want to open the front door?"
"Are you sure you want to walk another ten feet to the next Microsoft Representative?"
"Are you sure you want to purchase a copy of Windows 7?"
"Are you sure you want to use your Visa?"
"Are you sure you want a reciept?"

They are trying to prepare you for the Microsoft Experience.

Also remember that after every customer enters the door, an employee must push control-alt-delete in order to end the task so that the door opening procedure can be rebooted.

    Microsoft Store... meh.

Just another proof of the old adage: Apple Innovates. Microsoft imitates.
