Best Buy undercuts Verizon Droid pricing

Best Buy this morning scored a minor win by revealing that it will sell the Motorola Droid for $200 on contract, but without the $100 mail-in rebate that Verizon demands at its own stores. The retail chain adds that it will start taking pre-orders later today, just over a week before Verizon opens sales itself.

The gesture is increasingly common for Best Buy but until today has largely been confined to Sprint phones like the Palm Pre or HTC Hero. Most of the rebate-free sales have primarily centered around highly anticipated phones where rebates are still available, which hasn't been true for much of Verizon's lineup. Apple doesn't allow rebates for iPhone sales and so hasn't called special attention to its sales.
