Nintendo Wii rumored to get Netflix streaming

Leaked images that were not made public reveal the Nintendo Wii will soon get Netflix streaming capabilities, StreamingMedia reported on Wednesday. The source is said to be someone involved with the project, who confirms the development is already in testing stages and the arrival of the service is due fairly soon.

While adding the service to the current console would obviously restrict it to standard definition content, some believe Nintendo may hold off until sometime next year or 2011 to bring it onto a rumored next-generation Wii HD console which could play HD movies. Launching the service now would allow the two parties to work out any bugs or other issues before HD compatibility arrives, however.

Netflix recently confirmed it will bring its service to Sony's PS3, ending its exclusive partnership with Microsoft and its Xbox 360 console.
