New Planon DocuPen scanners add features, speed

Planon on Wednesday introduced its new series of DocuPen Xtreme scanning pens, which includes the X05, X10 and X50. The X05 and X10 can support 600DPI resolutions, while the X50 doubles it to 1,200DPI. Each of the pens has a 200MHz processor and 64MB of memory, both the highest in Planon's lineup.

Once a document is scanned, an integrated Bluetooth connection can send the contents to compatible smartphones, notebooks and desktops for editing, storage and sending out as e-mail attachments. A new, brighter OLED display has been integrated, while the built-in lithium-polymer battery is lighter and longer lasting than previous pen scanners from Planon.

The X05 and X10 can scan in black and white and 24-bit color modes, while the X50 ups resolution and adds a grayscale mode. A copy function lets users directly scan images to Planon Printstik printers for quick production of hard copies.

The battery in all is recharged via a USB 2.0 connection, which also doubles as a way to transfer files to and from the devices. The built-in memory can be expanded thanks to a microSD memory card.

Pricing for the DocuPen Xtreme X-Series scanning pens starts at $370.
