Speakers provide DSP, pebble remote control

Loudspeaker company Bowers & Wilkins has announced its latest set of computer speakers, the MM-1. Each speaker integrates one 3-inch woofer and a 1-inch tweeter, with each driver powered by a dedicated 18W amplifier. The tweeters feature B&W's Nautilus tube-loaded design claimed to dampen resonance and improve high-frequency sounds.

The speakers also integrate Digital Signal Processing (DSP) components to automatically adjust sound balance depending on the signal. When attached to a computer via USB, the speakers can handle the digital to analog conversion for improved sound. Users can plug their headphones into the MM-1, which integrates a headphone amp claimed to provide a noticeable improvement over the standard PC or Mac output.

The company lists a frequency response of -6dB at 57Hz and 22kHz. While many tower speakers are optimized for listening at a distance, the MM-1 is geared for near-field listening from just a few feet away. An aux-in jack can also be used to attach iPods or CD and DVD players.

The MM-1 is expected to ship in February, although pricing has yet to be announced.

Could be worth it.

The question is how much do you want to spend on computer speakers - if you listen to music all day on your computer, then it could be worth it to you. I predict these will be $300 or $400.

This statement is interesting:
"While many tower speakers are optimized for listening at a distance, the MM-1 is geared for near-field listening from just a few feet away"

Did they do a lot of research into this? If so, then these speakers are that much more enticing.
