ICD Vega may beat Apple to large tablets

Newcomer ICD late yesterday confirmed first details of a tablet design that promises to be one of the first in a new category of large media devices. Previously teased by NVIDIA's CEO, the Vega has a large 15.6-inch, 1366x768 resistive touchscreen and will have the performance to drive it through an NVIDIA Tegra chipset. Besides faster rendering, it should theoretically give the Vega 720p video playback at full resolution.

The device is also just the second known to use Android 2.0 and should get its new browser, Facebook links and other upgrades to the Google mobile OS. ICD intends it to be used for communication and gaming in addition to media playback.

Certain details are solidifed for the tablet, such as its 512MB of RAM, 1.3-megapixel webcam, Bluetooth, microSD storage and Wi-Fi. Options would give it 3G, including phone call functions, as well as an accelerometer.

Vega should launch in the first half of 2010 through major carriers and is expected to carry a low price, likely through carrier subsidies. Smaller 7- and 11-inch versions should also be available.
