Amazon upgrades Kindle 2 feature set

Amazon today gave its regular-size Kindle a lift through a firmware upgrade. It now has the same native PDF support as the larger Kindle DX and no longer needs a conversion through e-mail. Active battery life is also a large 85 percent longer and should last for about a full week with 3G turned on versus four days with the previous firmware.

The update will come with new Kindles and should be pushed for free to all of the second-generation readers through their 3G connection, whether it's the original EVDO version or the more recent international UMTS/HSPA model. First-generation Kindles should also get PDF support but won't have the extended battery life.

    from the begining

This should have been included from the very beginning. I guess Amazon is feeling the pressure this holiday season considering there are three big contenders now.

    Re: from the beginning

And yet if you wait until all things are as they should be 'from the beginning', it'll take you years later to release a product.

Take the iPhone. The first version should have had apps available, cut/copy/paste, voice dialing, etc. But they wanted to get it out there and improve it later.

    It's what everyone does.
