Hulu sees major jump in viewing

Hulu has recorded one of the largest gains in viewers in its short history, according to new data from Comscore. In October, the multi-studio video site hosted almost 856 million viewers, its best ever result and a 47 percent jump from September. The results were well behind Google's 10.5 billion views and 37.7 percent share of web video in the US but were enough to give Hulu second place with 3.1 percent, about twice as much as its next-best challengers.

The spike is credited both to the new TV season launching in earnest but also to the addition of ABC shows through Hulu's deal with Disney. Extending to the new networks gave Hulu full-length TV shows from three of the top four American studios and included particularly popular shows like Lost.

A surge on this level is a potential landmark for streaming, web-based video as an alternative to traditional TV. It may also signal a gradual shift away from pay-per-download stores like iTunes or Zune Video Marketplace, which often have more titles but also require manually transferring movies and are limited to certain computers and device types.

    I've been watching Hulu movies

lately and they're pretty decent. Most of them are older movies but the quality is good for a streaming site and the commercial breaks aren't very annoying to me. I wish there were more sites like Hulu or if Hulu got a lot more content.

    bigger jump

they'd see an even bigger jump if they started allowing 'set-up box' devices to actually play the content. like 360 / PS3 / Popcorn Hour / the Roku box.

and they'll see about a 100% drop the day they start charging without adding set-top box support first.
