Infineon, Nokia team on 4G chips

Infineon to make LTE chips with Nokia

Infineon today said it would work with Nokia to develop chipsets for 4G mobile Internet based on the Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard. The deal won't be exclusive and will primarily ensure that Infineon 4G hardware will support Nokia's technology licenses. The two hope to speed up development and make sure that 4G works properly across all devices, not just Nokia's.

The two also plan to collaborate early on chipsets for the future LTE Advanced standard, which at a theoretical peak of 1Gbps should be about 10 times faster than LTE as it's known today.

LTE is expected to be the most widespread form of 4G and is already slated to go live through multiple North American carriers in 2010 and 2011, including AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon in the US as well as all three major Canadian providers; European and Japanese carriers will also adopt it in force. Infineon's existing chipsets are found both in Nokia hardware as well as its competitors, like all iPhone models produced to date.
