Nook pre-orders delayed several weeks

Compounding its retail delay, Barnes & Noble quietly noted today that pre-orders of the Nook have been pushed back yet another week, to January 11th. The news comes less than a week after the first delay into 2010 and doesn't come with an additional explanation. The bookseller has already promised to give out "IOU" cards for those whose Nooks will ship after Christmas.

It's still unknown whether the rapidly expanding delays for Nook orders are due to sheer demand or to excessively tight supply. Amazon faced shortages for the first two holidays of Kindle sales but this year still has all models in stock. Barnes & Noble's device is more technically complex due to its secondary touchscreen and Wi-Fi, and is compounded by the retailer's relative inexperience with designing and producing its own hardware.
