JBL makes Creature III speakers official

updated 01:55 pm EST, Wed December 2, 2009

JBL Creature III more compact than before

After a brief tease earlier this fall, Harman's JBL label today released its Creature III speakers. The successors to JBL's 2.1-channel computer speaker line keep a similar alien-like shape but have a more compact subwoofer that more readily fits on a desktop. It also glows from beneath and now remembers volume set by the touch-sensitive controls on one of the satellites.

The audio equipment maker hasn't said whether the system's power output has changed since the Creature II, but it will initially ship the Creature III in black and white models. Both will cost $130 and will be available solely through Apple, both at its retail shops and through the online Apple Store.

    Still love the originals

I have a set of the original Creature speakers from 2003, still working and sounding great. I still can't believe that such loud, clear sound comes out of speakers so tiny, and the subwoofer pumps out impressive bass. If you're in the market for a new set of speakers, I'm sure this generation is just as good, if not better.

    Indeed

Indeed I'd still be using my original Creature speakers if the left channel didn't kack out. Now that's not a criticism of them, those things moved dorm rooms with me more times than I can remember, and I changed my desk around, they went through way more falls than a speaker should ever go through. If I could find a left sat I'd be super happy.

I'm pretty sure if I have the cash when these come out I'll be buying some ASAP.

    Solely Through Apple?

"...and will be available solely through Apple, both at its retail shops and through the online Apple Store."

Already listed at Amazon.com (03 Dec 09) for pre-order. No "Creature" speakers listed in the Apple Store.

I have two trios of JBL Creatures because they are fantastic for their size and price. I am in the market for another pair to replace some Bose junk that I foolishly bought...

BASS and TREBLE controls are BACKWARDS !!

The BASS and TREBLE controls are BACKWARDS! Turning either k*** to (+) DECREASES its effect, while turning either k*** to (-) INCREASES its effect. Played around in the Apple Store for 10 minutes with this, and could not believe that this was not caught by quality control. Unbelievable, but true.

As for sound, I’d rate them a 4 (out of 5). Midrange is weak, but this can be corrected with the equalizer in iTunes. Bass had a slight buzz, too.

I do like these speakers, and may buy them once they're available in white (currently only available in black at the Apple Store).
