BlackBerry undercuts iPhone with AT&T 50% off deal

ATT cuts BBerry prices in half for promo

RIM hoped to fuel its BlackBerry holiday sales with a major sales promo at AT&T. The deal cuts the price of virtually all BlackBerry handsets in half, even including newer models like the Bold 9700 and Curve 8520. As a result, the smartphones will cost as little as $100 and $50 respectively after both a rebate and a two-year contract.

The discounts should take effect from December 4th but aren't given a fixed end date. Alongside this, the carrier is giving away the Samsung Solstice for free after a $50 rebate as long as it's connected to a $20 data or messaging plan alongside voice.

AT&T's discounts are meant at least partly to help it compete against Verizon's Buy One Get One (BOGO) deal, which provides two BlackBerries at regular pricing, but also appears destined to spur sales in a season of particularly intense competition. Unlike last year, RIM now has to compete against a $99 iPhone that challenges its popular Curve phones and has issued a cautious outlook for the fall that casts doubts on its sales.

RIM has also watched as Verizon has seemingly downplayed all its BlackBerry launches to date, timing the high-profile unveilings of the Motorola Droid and HTC Droid Eris to overlap with considerably less prominent releases for the BlackBerry Storm2 and Curve 8530.

The only way Apple is going to

win this war is with content. Smartphones are going to continue to drop in price and still have good hardware features. Apple isn't going to play that game with new iPhones. They'll have to bring something to the plate that will attract and hold customers other than low price. It will have to be media content.

    @iphonerulez

Apple iTunes is the largest reseller of music in the US.

Apple iTunes has the largest collection of audio and video podcasts in the industry.

Apple App Store is the largest and pretty much the only successful store for mobiles.

Yeah Apple SURELY lacks content. Not.

    Profit rules the roost

While RIM is giving away phones, Apple is making all the profit. 50 cents out of every dollar of profit on smart phones is made by Apple.

    Yep, give them phones away......

    Just a thought.

Good news if ANY old smartphone will do

and good news if you are an AAPL shareholder... their competitors are giving away their product (the only product they have to sell, by the way) while Apple is able to maintain their price point because it's the gold standard by which all other smartphones are measured. Just like the iPod.

    Difference

This article doesn't seem to realize that there is a difference between RIM giving away phones at 50% off and AT&T giving away phones at 50% off. Surely a lesson in retailer/supplier relationships is in order for whoever wrote this article.

I'm surprised that you guys commenting on this post can't seem to distinguish the difference either. There is no evidence that RIM has reduced the wholesale price of their product, and even if they did, certainly not by 50%. To believe such, would require a total lack of understanding of the subsidized phone market.

    Use your head guys. Please!
