Motorola gets stake in Sensitive Object
Motorola signaled the seriousness of its commitment to touchscreen phones this morning by investing in Sensitive Object, a developer for handheld touch devices. The deal gives Motorola access to Anywhere MultiTouch, which uses sound rather than finger electricity, pressure or optics to detect input. By detecting the waves emanating from a touch, the technique can recognize touch beyond just the screen or a dedicated trackpad.
No clues are directly given as to what Motorola plans to do with its stake in the six-year-old firm, though Motorola has recently stepped up its efforts to compete in the touchscreen phone arena both with regular phones like the QA4 Evoke as well as full smartphones. Both the Cliq and Droid give Motorola some of its first true touchscreen smartphones; the Droid's international counterpart, the Milestone, includes multi-touch in some of its pre-installed apps.
