PS3 firmware update

Sony on Tuesday gave a quick look at a PlayStation 3 firmware update that adds a pair of key features. The patch gives the console the option to play PSP minis itself. The simple, download-only games will work much like the PS1 conversions also playable on both platforms and should be added to the PlayStation Store on PS3s within a few weeks.

Those migrating to slim PS3s or otherwise updating their systems now have a Data Transfer tool that can port content between PS3s attached directly through Ethernet. Locally stored music, photos and videos can simply be copied, but games, saved games and videos downloaded from PSN have to be erased from the sending system.

Sony hasn't provided an exact timeframe for 3.15 to go live but anticipates it becoming available "shortly."
