Toshiba intros 64GB NAND flash memory modules

Components could double storage on current devices

Toshiba on Monday introduced a new 64GB embedded NAND flash memory module, claimed to be the highest capacity in the industry. The component combines a dedicated controller and sixteen 32Gbit chips manufactured using the company's 32nm technology. Chip thinning and layering methods help bring the chip thickness down to just 30 micrometers.

The new modules could potentially be used to double the storage capacity of portable devices such as iPods and smartphones. The iPhone, which utilizes a single module, could see a capacity jump to 64GB using the new components, while the iPod touch could theoretically reach 128GB with two modules.

The 64GB modules will ship as samples sometime this month, with volume production expected in the first quarter of 2010.

    Crazy

Simply amazing. At $399 for a 128GB iPod Touch, maybe the iPod Classic will finally die off. Hopefully, we'll get a funeral a la Mac OS 9 in 2002. :)

If nything ever replaces the Classic, it will not

Music navigation and control on the iPod Touch and iPhone is absolutely terrible compared to the Classic or the Nano. If anything replaces the Classic it will be a high capacity Nano. Long live the click wheel.
