Gains expected through 2013

As many industries continue to struggle in the current economic climate, a new IDC report suggests worldwide computer shipments have finally grown in the third quarter of 2009. Although sales expanded by a meager 2.3 percent, the gain follows three consecutive quarters of decline.

Mobile computers showed the largest jump in shipments, with netbooks gaining 37 percent over last year. Mini notebooks doubled in market share from 14 percent to 28 percent.

Desktop sales have demonstrated the worst performance, although several recent reports suggest Apple's iMacs have been top sellers this year. The company is also said to have earned half of all retail revenue during October, as it has maintained high ASPs while many competitors have seen declines in revenue despite strong sales.
