Cowon V5 HD gets HDMI output, 4.8-inch screen

Korea's Cowon has introduced launched one of its portable HD media players, the V5 HD. The device sports a 4.8-inch touchscreen with an 800x480 resolution, but it can output 720p HD video thanks to its HDMI output. A DMB TV tuner is integrated, and it supports multiple common HD-ready formats that include H.264.

Standard definition videos can be put on to external displays using a proprietary composite video cable. Memory can be upgraded thanks to an SD memory card slot. Apart from multimedia playback, the WinCE 6.0 device will allow users to surf the web thanks to its Wi-Fi connection. The V5 HD's battery life that is claimed to last 45 hours when playing audio, or 10 hours for video playback.

Applications allow for the use of the device as a digital photo frame, and there is Flash support, a world clock, calculator, notepad, converter, RSS reader and more apps.

Three models will be available with 8GB, 16GB and 32GB versions on tap. Cowon will begin shipping the V5 HD in its home market of South Korea on the first of January, with pricing set at the equivalent of $253 for the 8GB unit. Whether a US release is forthcoming is unknown, but likely. [via Anythingbutipod]
