Samsung, RealD team up on 3D HDTVs

Samsung and RealD on Monday announced a partnership that will see the former integrate the latter's 3D technology into its TVs. Samsung will support the proprietary stereoscopic RealD Format to bring high-quality 3D content into viewers' homes. RealD Format is a more advanced version of a side-by-side 3D format that uses filters and other technology to produce 3D images.

The companies will also work together to develop active eyewear technology and New Passive Display technology to promote more widespread use of 3D TV. RealD is the technology used in blockbuster films such as the recent Avatar.

Recently, JVC and Panasonic have also committed to use RealD technology for their 3D-enabled hardware.
