HP Projection Companion and 4 LCDs live

HP's main cross-platform contributions at CES today have centered on five displays. Fronting the group, the Notebook Projection Companion is HP's first projector explicitly designed for portability and measures just 4.4 inches long and 0.9 pounds even though it can throw an image as large as 60 inches when 8.5 feet away. Its native resolution is small but widescreen friendly at 852x600.

The extra small nature of the DLP-based unit leaves it primarily for dark rooms as it musters an 800:1 contrast ratio and 100 lumens of brightness. The size also partly dictates using just VGA for input and output. HP hopes to have the Notebook Projection Companion ready for January 15th at $499.

Four desktop LCDs join the introduction and are led by two performance screens. The 21.5-inch ZR22w and 24-inch ZR24w are built for image quality first and use color-accurate S-IPS panels that show 96 percent of the sRGB color space. Both have 3,000:1 dynamic contrast ratios, eight-way adjustable stands, DisplayPort/DVI/VGA input and native 1080p resolutions, though only the smaller ZR22w meets Energy Star requirements. Their prices start from $289, and both will land in February.

Two budget displays, the 19-inch Compaq LE19f and 22-inch Compaq LA22f, use frugal TN panels but are the first to use low-power LED backlighting and meet the EPEAT Silver and Gold energy levels respectively. The LE19f is simple and has little adjustment along with a 1440x900 resolution, a 1,000:1 contrast ratio and DVI/VGA input. Its larger sibling, however, gets a 1680x1050 picture, a much more vivid 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, full adjustability and a third input through DisplayPort.

Prices for the LA and LE screens will start at a much lower $179, and either size will be available at the same time as the ZR models.
