Gear captures both video and stills

Sanyo has announced a pair of new camcorders in its Xacti series, the VPC-SH1 and the VPC-CS1. Both are defined as "dual" cameras, capable of capturing both stills and video. The SH1 supports 30x zoom, 1080p video, and stills extrapolated from 4 megapixels to 10. Videos are saved as MPEG-4 H.264 files on SD cards, including Eye-Fi models and the forthcoming SDXC format.

And unusual aspect of the camera's controls is the presence of secondary photo and video buttons on the top, allowing users to record low-angle images without stooping too far down. The camera should ship in February at a cost of $400.

The CS1 is primarily designed with size and weight in mind, making it small enough to fit in a pocket. It nevertheless records with the same video quality, sacrificing still photos by only upscaling from 3 to 8 megapixels. Zoom is limited to 10x range on a 38mm lens, in contrast with the SH1's 35mm lens. The CS1 is also due in February, at a price of $300.
