Zune HD to get new codec and playlist hooks
Microsoft in a low-key update today revealed that it will add a new file format and major new features to the Zune HD this spring. The upgrade will add native support for XviD and any other MPEG-4 Part 2 ASP codec. It should work both on the device as well as when put out to an external TV through the Zune's HD AV Dock.
The upgrade also addresses a longstanding complaint about a feature gap between the PC software and the player; Smart DJ playlists are now available from the Zune HD itself. Offline, the technology functions much like a Genius playlist on an iPod or iPhone, but when connected through Wi-Fi it will also include any Zune Pass songs that aren't already loaded on the player.
It's still unknown when the Facebook app will become available, but it remains in development. [via CNET]
