Palm chief has "never even used" an iPhone

Palm's Rubinstein admits not following Apple

Palm chief Jon Rubinstein in an interview at CES asserted that he doesn't compare his company's products against those of Apple's. He notes that the company's executives "don’t pay that much attention" to their rivals in nearby Cupertino and that he personally hasn't owned an iPhone to compare against. The executive also maintained that he doesn't worry about what Apple is doing as a whole."

"I don’t have an iPhone," Rubinstein told All Things D. "I've never even used one."

Many have pointed out choices like multi-touch and iTunes sync as evidence Apple's influence, but to date webOS has had a significantly different design philosophy, centering on multitasking, contact integration other historic weak points of the iPhone without following Apple's interface.

Alongside the comments, the CEO took a casual approach to Apple's more successful recent attempts to block Palm's webOS phones from iTunes, noting that it isn't "good for their customers" but accepting that Apple's opinion isn't likely to be swayed. Unofficially, it's suspected that Palm has a self-imposed limit that will make it stop modifying Palm phone firmware if it takes more than 40 hours each week.

Rubinstein further echoed what he told Electronista after his keynote on Thursday regarding other carriers. Although AT&T has said it will carry two webOS phones, the Palm leader said there is "nothing to announce" for now regarding the deal with the third US carrier. He has also so far declined to outline plans for Canada and other countries.

I think his attitude is just plain foolish

Your company is trying to build products to compete and the dude is too nonchalant to even try out other devices to see how his company's device compares. Wow. He doesn't have to buy an iPhone. All he has to do is try one of his employees' iPhones. Hehe. I think that's why people do taste tests and stuff. It really doesn't matter since Palm isn't going to be able to hang with Apple when the next model iPhone is released.

Maybe he should start using one...

If he hasn't used an iPhone, then he should start using one so he knows his competition, what his company is up against and why they have been a failure these past few years. It's stubborn CEOs like this that drive a company to the ground by thinking they're still on top of things and have a lot more to offer than the current leader.

While at the same time, they create a hack to mimic the competition's own device so they can sync into iTunes. Hmm. Something isn't right. Here's an easy to follow advice that he can understand:

    Step 1: Open mouth
    Step 2: Insert foot

And this is why Palm is as Good as Dead

This guy is an absolute CLOWN. If he is with Palm by the end of the week something is wrong. How can he say he's never used an iPhone, it's mind boggling...like he thinks that his POS phone is any good and doesn't care about the competition, Can anyone realllly be this stupid? It just occurred to me...HE IS TRYING TO KILL PALM....he wants to retire...take his millions in bonuses...and leave cause he knows that Palm doesn't stand a "snow balls chance in h***"..positively unreal...!

    He Looks Vaguely Familiar ...

... hmmm ... wasn't Mr. Rubinstein with Jobs and Apple for many, many years before taking over at Palm? At the end, wasn't he Senior VP of the division that created this little iPod-thing?

Rubinstein probably felt like he would step out of the shadow of Steve Jobs and become Steve Jobs by taking the leap to Palm. So he's copped the attitude of a successful innovator without doing and being rewarded for all that messy innovation that typically accompanies such.

"Palm chief Jon Rubinstein in an interview at CES asserted that he doesn't compare his company's products against those of Apple's."

Neither does most anyone else. Because there is not much of a comparison.

But I do have to disagree with you, Hawaiianvolcanoes. Rubenstein is definitely not trying to kill Palm. He's succeeding in killing Palm.

    Heard the same from Motorola

Padmasree Warrior, when the iPhone was just coming out also tried to ignore it claiming that Apple didn't have the understanding of the cell phone industry that Motorola had. It was clear then both that she had no clue, and that Motorola was now irrelevant, particularly as long as she was CTO (she's since moved on to try to ruin Cisco).

It's never a good idea to ignore any competitor, Apple in particular.

know your competition - or fail

Anyone who doesn't take the time to study their competition, know their competition, know of it's strengths and weaknesses is just destined to fail. No wonder you hear less and less about Palm these days - they are living in a vacuum and not trying to be competitive. I'm a huge fan of Apple, but we need the competition to continue to push Apple to be innovative - the competition is what brought us great products like the iPhone. There was a time when the brand had strength, when it was seen as a competitor and leader. It's a shame to see such a statement come from it's leadership - pretty much telling all it's employee's that they have given up as Jon rides out the final years of Palm before it vanishes from the landscape. R.I.P. Palm.

    Yeah, Right!

It just so happens that his company keeps ripping off Apple to get itunes to load songs onto palm devices instead of writing their own software to do it.

While I did like my Palm PDA's at the time, their lack of support for the Mac platform kept getting worse as time went on. I moved on to Mark/Space Missing Sync to get full Mac support with my Palm. Compared to my iPhone and even my iPod Touch the palms were just lacking.

    Jon Rubenstein is an idiot

Jon threw Palm's billions proving that he can buy a third rate phone from a Chinese manufacturer, put a linux and Java on it, and call it an iPhone killer. Java will never be able to compete with the iPhone's native implementation.

There is not a single company on this planet that isn't doing that or planning to do it. The problem is, Palm has spent so much money doing something that is so inexpensive to do, they will have to pray they can turn the books around quickly enough, to prove to Nokia or Sony Ericsson, that Palm is worth buying out.

    Strangely appropriate

    /facepalm - it's a pun but strangely appropriate as a comment!

    Likely story

This would sound like Toyota CEO saying "I have never driven a German car'.
