64GB moviNAND, 32GB microSDHC appear
Samsung today claimed a pair of its own firsts with improvements to its flash memory storage for smartphones and similar device. Its moviNAND memory takes advantage of the company's new 30 nanometer process to reach a record 64GB in a single package. The part stacks a full 16 thin, 4GB chips to reach the capacity and includes its own storage controller, even though the entire package is less than 0.06 inches tall.
Its microSDHC card line also benefits from the upgrade. The removable flash now holds as much as 32GB, or eight 4GB stacked chips, to double Samsung's previous best. Despite the capacity, it still measures just 0.04in at its thickest point and shouldn't have difficulty fitting into regular microSDHC slots.
Samsung is revealing the products late and says it has already been mass producing the 64GB moviNAND since December while the 32GB microSDHC will enter the same stage in February. Customers for the cards aren't specified, though Apple is the largest single purchaser of Samsung's flash and could use it for future handhelds.
