Microsoft slams Android as "free like a puppy"

MS tries to downplay Android threat

Microsoft Windows Consumer Product GM James DeBragga drew attention at a CES panel late last week with remarks attacking Android. When discussing netbooks, the executive criticized the OS after eDGe creator Entourage's CEO praised it for being free. DeBragga said it was only "free like a puppy" and suggested it was trouble when it actually came to using it.

At the Laptop-moderated panel, he instead touted Windows Mobile as being better for its end-to-end support, as Microsoft has an established process for supporting the smartphone developers and making sure they in turn can help customers. Early Nexus One buyers needing help have faced difficulties as most non-billing support alternates between Google and HTC, creating confusion.

The general manager also dismissed the notions of smartbooks and tablets introduced at the show, such as the ICD Ultra and Lenovo Skylight. To DeBragga, these aren't effective as Windows hardware is better prepared to work offline where the lighter machines often don't have enough storage or performance to work without Internet access.

Both observations nonetheless come after Microsoft's news was overshadowed at CES. In addition to high-profile Android phones like the Backflip and Nexus One, virtually all handheld or smartbook-class devices unveiled at the Las Vegas gathering were running Android or a variant of Linux and pushed Windows Mobile almost entirely to the sidelines. Often, these platforms are necessary as they're both the only major operating systems that will run on ARM chips as well as less expensive to license.

"So why doesn't everyone just switch to our cooler puppy? it's that dead one with the maggots crawling around, right over there in that dark corner."

    WTF?

So does Microsoft intentionally have dicks who don't know s*** as public spokesmen?

I've been using the TMO G1 since it was introduced and have no problems using it. It's a h*** of a lot better than Windows Mobile. Remember the old acronym for Windows CE?

    tired

Seems to me they similarly dismissed the Apple iPhone as insignificant. How's that strategy working out for ya M$? Why don't you put your energies into building a better product for once, instead of trying to discredit/undermine your competition? I don't think the latter strategy is working any longer...

    It's better

It's a better feeling with a free puppy, than having to deal with p*** that is WindowsMobile.

    damn them puppies

Really?!!? with seth and amy - or this case - just Ryan

Really Microsoft.. Android is like a puppy? Good anaology - cuz everyone hates puppies... right?!?!

Really... is M$ trying to come off like Cruella de Ville here.?

And REALY?!?!?! is that your best argument... sure its cute and cuddly and everyone loves it, but in the unlikely event it doesn't work right - it may be a hassle to support it? is that the best you got - cuz you don't make phones and you don't have a record for prompt and friendly care - so are you just trying to push people to Apple? cuz they do both of those...

    Really!

    Hmm

By that analogy, I guess that makes WinMo like a free rabid puppy.

    It physically pains me...

to side with someone from MS, but based on how whiny the Google Fanboys have been if anyone dares criticize the Nexus One, I thought this was hilarious.

    Free like a puppy...

One that isn't paper-trained and always dropping it's doggy doo-doo and peeing everywhere it shouldn't.

Sure the fAndroids are cheering the Nexus One today, but within a couple of weeks, there'll be a newer Android superphone with even better specs. Either a slightly faster Snapdragon processor, a megapixel more for a camera, an even bigger display and Android 2.1.1.1 OS. It's all about the hardware for the fAndroids. They'll be able to lay claim an Android iPhone killer at least once every month.
