RED ONE cameras get new sensor Jan 22

RED this evening said it would start offering RED ONE owners an upgrade to its new Mysterium-X sensor next week on January 22nd. The deal will give the 4K camera the improved imaging for $5,750 and will also include a new optical low pass filter. A new version of REDCINE-X will be needed to handle the updated greater-than-HD video and should be available at the same time.

Those who are also willing to launch into the EPIC-X beta program will get a $1,250 credit if they qualify and want to join in at stage 1 or 2, RED adds. Upgrades are expected to take about two weeks.

While the versions of Mysterium-X that will reach RED's other cameras should be higher resolution, the primary advantage of the new sensor will be low-light performance, which the company tested earlier in the year. The ONE has often been complimented for bringing 4K down to regular prices but has also been criticized for its relatively noisy output at high ISO levels.

    And...

If you buy it on a Thursday that also happens to be the fourth day of a given month, they might actually provide you with a fully functional, finished and complete device. Or perhaps not.

    Well...

You've got to admit, they make the coolest looking gear!
Their stuff looks a bit like if you turned an M4 assault rifle into a camera.

That Mysterium-X sensor must be made from Unobtanium.
