Tiffen intros steadicam mount for smartphones

Steadicam-Tiffen, maker of camera stabilization rigs, has scaled down its offering by making the first production-ready anti-shake mount for cellphones and pocket cameras. The Smoothee can grip an iPhone 3GS or Motorola Droid smartphone along with Cisco's Flip camcorders and compensates for most unintentional movement, producing a stable movie shot. Each of these devices needs to be mounted in a provided case, which has a quick-release mount built in and is specially weighted to balance the mount.

The Smoothee is also Steadicam's simplest rig, with little adjustments needed using only a couple of knobs. Pricing and a release date for the Smothee have not yet been disclosed. [via OhGizmo]

And It Can Be Mine ...

... if the price is right!

Anyone care to make serious predictions on what they'll charge for this?

    why?

the camera on the iPhone sucks. It's better than nothing, but as somebody who spends a lot of time looking at images... I can barely stand to look at iPhone video. It wants lots of light. It does horribly in anything approaching shadows or less than full daylight/full office lighting.

    my guess

Foe Hammer, my guess based on the image and that it's probably mostly textured plastic that just looks like die-cast aluminium, is something around $149!

Easier and more cost effective to use Deshaker

Good marketing decision but it will go no where. "Hey, we make steadycam equipment and anything iPhone gets marketing coverage. Let's make a steadycam mount for the iPhone!" Recording with the cell is mostly a spontaneous decision. Is someone really going to spend money on this device and carry it around when needed to capture low quality video? Might as well use a filter to "deshake" the video afterwards.

VideoPad Video Editor offers a free video editing solution w/ Gunnar Thalin's deshaker filter built-in. It's easier to use than VirtualDub's integration and the free version (after trial runs out) will output to avi, wmv and creation of DVD's. Before trial is over, all other formats are available.

vReveal also does this with CUDA (GPU parallel processing) to speed up the process considerably.
