Wii last major console to get Netflix
Nintendo and Netflix today said they had struck a deal to bring Netflix' Watch Instantly streaming service to the Wii. The service will initially work much like that for the PS3 and will need a special disc to enable Internet video. It will still require just a $9 or higher monthly plan to unlock the feature, which doesn't disrupt typical DVD mailings.
Access to the service will only reach the Wii in the spring, according to the two companies. The reasons behind the delay aren't given other than the need to prepare mail-out discs for Netflix subscribers.
The console is the last of the current generation to get Netflix and comes well after the late 2008 release of an Xbox 360 version, though this requires a $50 yearly Xbox Live Gold account where the PS3 and Wii services only require the Netflix membership. The movie provider considers spreading its Internet service to devices an important priority but for the most part has prioritized Blu-ray players and dedicated media hubs first. Its Xbox 360 deal was originally considered an exclusive and indirectly hindered adoption on other platforms.
