Clear to offer new WiMAX modems with ATA feature
US WiMAX operator Clear will soon release two new WiMAX modems with features that aren't found in the company's current hardware offerings. This includes integrated ATA capability which will allow for VoIP calls without having to add any other hardware. The first modem comes from Taiwan's Gemtek, though information is scarce.
The Gemtek device has an omni-directional antenna and will be priced at the same $80 after a $10 discount as other modems with a Clear plan. Otherwise, users can lease it for $5 per month and this modem will only be available in Las Vegas, at least initially.
The second modem comes form Motorola in the form of its WiMAX CPEi 725. Other than the high gain omni-directional antenna, there are data and voice access ports. It has integrated QoS features for better data and VoIP performance. It will cost the same $80 or $5 per month on a lease, but is only available in Portland.
If or when these modems ship is unknown, as is whether they will eventually be offered in markets other than the two listed. [via WimaxATL]
