Ringtones may die off by 2016

Ringtones to start long decline this year

Cellular ringtones are about to start a long decline that ultimately kills the business, IBIS World says in a new study. Despite being worth as much as $881 million in 2007, yearly ringtone sales are estimated drop to $750 million for this year and could die out entirely by 2016.

The death of the format is likely attributable to the rise of messaging phones and smartphones. As more phone owners either use SMS or Internet-based services like Twitter to communicate, they're less likely to care about voice calls and the ringtones that accompany them. The high prices of ringtones, usually between $2 and $3 per clip, is also likely to deter those who aren't either already disposed to ringtones or who are cost-conscious.

Part of the fall may also stem from the lack of software locks on ringtones. Hardware like the iPhone and most Android devices have the freedom to use any suitably formatted audio file as a ringtone where some phones were artificially limited to built-in ringtones or those purchased through the carrier.

    It's about time.

You should be able to use any recording you have in your library as a ringtone for no additional charge. My carrier allows this on most phones. I'd never pay $3 for a freaking ringtone.

    But but...

...but what will they advertise on TV at 3 o'clock in the morning if ring-tones die out? ;-)

I have to say, I never really understood the concept of paying for ring-tones. Any of the Sony-Ericsson phones I've owned for the last 5 or 6 years have been able to use any piece of audio as a ringtone. Quicktime (or Audacity if you want fancy effects and fade-in/outs) can create them for free for my iPhone too, mind you, I always seem to revert to the ones supplied with the handset eventually anyway.

    Ringtone trick

    Here's a trick.

Take a song with the extension ".m4a," make a copy and edit it (with Garageband or HairerSoft's Amadeus on the Mac) to a ringtone length, and save as ".m4a."

Now for the trick. Highly technical.

Change the ".m4a" to ".m4r" and drag it to iTunes. Ringtone.

that works fine for an iPhone, but what about Verizon subscribers?

    1) Bend over
    2) Spread your cheeks
    3) Let Verizon F you in the A for each ringtone you want on your Verizon phone, because they won't let you roll your own.

    KidRing

There are a ton of simple ringtone apps out there that let you make as many ringtones as you want right on the iPhone. I like a little one called KidRing for $0.99 because I can easy combine actual rings with the voice of my child (or the person who is calling me). You can also use Garage Band and do the same thing, but I just find it easier on the phone itself. Charging for each ring is just silly.

    to think

that not that long ago, music industry suits were making a stink about how much iTMS charged for ringtones, because that was their new savior, making $2 or $3 off a ringtone which is just a snippet of the same song you can pay $0.99 for on iTMS (for the whole song).

Sometimes I think we need to just drop a nuclear bomb on the next convention of these idiots - wipe out these cockroaches in one stroke and start over. Their greed and stupidity is endless.

    I can't believe...

...anyone ever paid for ringtones. What a rip.

I always made my own on my phones, and if I couldn't, I would just do without.

Who lets their phones ring anyways - mine is almost always on silent... but mostly thats because I am afraid of one girl calling me when I am with another :)
