Samsung TL, SL get better lenses
Samsung rounded out a small wave of compact cameras with a trio of new smaller models. The TL105 and TL110 are two thirds of an inch thick but upgrade the optics of the outgoing TL100 with respective improved 27 and 27.5mm lenses that also have longer 4X and 5X zooms each. They also bring Smart Auto (scene detection) to 720p video recording, not just still images.
An extra minor touch is a new set of in-camera visual effects that simulate particular cameras and lenses, such as an artificial fisheye lens or Lomography. Besides its longer reach, the TL110 improves on the TL105 with 14.2 megapixels instead of 12.2. Either ships in February, though Samsung hasn't given them prices.
One budget model, the SL630, gets a slight optical adjustment of its own with a 28-140mm 5X lens mated to a 12.2 megapixel sensor, optical image stabilization and the usual software set. Video recording is limited to standard-definition 640x480, however. It too lacks a price but is due in March.
