HTC to ditch tablet PC plans, focus on phones

Smartphone maker HTC has stopped all work on a planned tablet PC, said the corporation's sales and marketing director, Anthony Petts, on Monday. Instead, the company will focus on developing a new generation of smartphones, including ones using Google's Android operating system.

Rumors of an HTC-made touch tablet were rampant prior to this year's CES, with the company reportedly developing a few working models, with at least one of them powered by the Google Chrome OS. Unnamed sources also maintained the devices are based on Qualcomm chipsets, which could include the ever-popular 1GHz Snapdragon chip.

The stillborn HTC tablet would have had to compete with Apple's rumored upcoming tablet computer, believed to be officially announced at an event on January 27th. [via ChannelNews]
