Tablet launch to be delayed until June?

Unveiling still expected on January 27th

The Apple tablet may be released in June, rather than March as is commonly expected, says a Kaufman Bros. analyst. Shaw Wu cites supply chain sources, who say that a June launch may be necessary because of "minor issues" with battery life and durability. An announcement is still expected on January 27th, which would echo the deployment schedule of the iPhone. The device was revealed in January 2007, but only launched in June of that year.

Wu also reports being told that the tablet is a hybrid between a Mac and an iPod touch, but closer to the latter, most likely meaning it uses an ARM-based processor. "From our understanding, it is not intended to replace a Mac but be somewhat of a 'super' iPod touch where video, gaming, Web browsing, e-books and the ability to run multiple apps would be enhanced with the much larger screen," the analyst writes.

The tablet is forecast to sell for about $999 at retail, mainly the result of a $100 touchscreen pricetag as quoted by sources. Adding to the cost of the device may be high glass, sensor, semiconductor and substrate expenses. Wu argues on his own that device is likely to omit 3G in favour of Wi-Fi, avoiding strain on cellular networks such as AT&T's. A carrier-subsidized tablet is still a possibility, he cautions.

Kaufman estimates call for a million tablets to be sold each quarter. Roughly 5 million may actually be built in the first year of production, Wu's sources suggest. Some analysts have called for the product to be cheaper, which could make such numbers too conservative.

    3/4G Radio?

When the iPhone was introduced, Apple did it 6 months early because they had to submit the phone to the FCC for approval. Approval could take a while and, since the submittal had to be public, Apple chose to announce what it was doing rather than have everyone deducing what they were doing by reading the FCC application. I wonder if Apple has to go through the approval loop again?

    Wu is full of it.

There is absolutely nothing in Wu "analysis" that he could not have found on AppleInsider.com or MacRumors.com—except one thing. His information that Apple will delay the tablet until June, he pulled out of his @$$.

    Unannounced product...

How can an unannounced product be delayed. The only delay evident is in the mind of Shaw Wu. Nice try though.

    No cellular?

I think wifi only would be a mistake. It's a portable device, wifi isn't everywhere yet. What happens on a train? In an airport? The ability to download anywhere from the cell network is a major feature for Kindle.

    Glad NO cellular

We don't need it locked to a carrier. Just have a USB port so folks can by the USB stick from there favorite carrier just like the laptop folks do. It will suck if its delayed but given the termoil in taiwan at the plants, I can see why. I new sooner or later the cheap labor will get tired of cheap pay.

    huh?

I thought the bloody thing is "in full production"? Gosh, I really don't know anymore which half-baked rumors I'm supposed to believe!!

It could be in full production...

If there are minor battery issues, they may just need to be sorted out by fine-tuning the software. As for durability, I'm puzzled. Maybe flexing problems? That should have been caught in prototypes. As for dropping, forget it. I can't imagine any tablet surviving a few feet drop without cracking the glass. A rubberized case with a strap would be the first thing on my list to buy with a tablet.

    too much money

If this thing is really going to be $999, I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that it won't sell well outside of specialty markets that really need a tablet form factor.

Something less powerful than a MacBook at the same price is a mistake, and given that this thing seems likely to run the iPhone OS, it's going to be less powerful, is just not what I see most people wanting. It's less portable than an iPod, it's less powerful than a netbook, and it's too expensive.

If Apple really wants this to be a hit, it's going to need to be less than $500. I'm betting on Newton levels of sales if it's $999.

    another thought

remember all the reports that iphones were running out of stock on the release weekend. in some areas it was almost a full week before they were back at stores.

perhaps Apple is stockpiling units to try to avoid instant sellouts followed by major delays. which would take some time. As will the content providers who have yet to receive full details and SDKs cause that would contain confirmed info that Apple doesn't want out yet.
