Garmin-ASUS bringing 1st Android phone to MWC

The Garmin-ASUS alliance will unveil its first Android-powered handset at the upcoming Mobile World Congress trade show, ASUS handheld division president Benson Lin said. According to a Thursday Digitimes report, the two also plan on releasing as many as five other smartphones this year that run on Windows Mobile or Android this year. This Android phone will share booth space at MWC with a new Windows Mobile 6.5.3 handset, the M10.

The M10 will have a 600MHz Qualcomm CPU along with a 3.5-inch resistive touchscreen that has a resolution of about 800x480 pixels. A 5-megapixel camera will also be onboard, along with a GPS sensor. The handset will launch in Taiwan early next month, priced at equivalent of about $435, Lin said.

Pricing or a release date for the unnamed Android phone are unknown.

The two have already released the Windows Mobile 6.5-powered Nuvifone M20 and Linux-powered G60. The 6.5.3 update for the M10 should bring more touch-friendly buttons and other minor upgrades.
