Android users more likely to want free extras

Myxer in a study today revealed that users of Android, and most other smartphone platforms, are much more likely to look for free ringtones and wallpapers than iPhone owners. Of all the downloads in the fall, the combined Android platform resulted in seven times more downloads than for Apple's lineup. Visits to the website were also three times higher as Android users make up about 12 percent of all traffic.

Both are in the relative minority, as 67 percent of visitors are using a BlackBerry OS variant. About 11 percent use Windows Mobile and 5 percent use Palm's webOS or PalmOS, either of which is more popular than the iPhone on the site.

The largest portion of Android visits come from a T-Mobile G1 or HTC Dream, but that number has shrunk to just 35 percent as the myTouch 3G (HTC Magic), Motorola's Cliq and Droid, and the HTC Hero have all taken places on the market.

The content provider doesn't directly explain the discrepancy, but the gap may exist primarily due to the gaps in content between iTunes and it rivals. Apple's portal lets purchasers make ringtones of their own tracks and also supplies apps that can fulfill much of the need of a site like Myxer. Most BlackBerry and Android owners have a much smaller selection of apps and are often only given a carrier store to shop for ringtones.

    some story

Most folks with the iPhone can easily make their own ringtones and wallpapers...
why buy something you can create yourself?

Android doesn't have enough apps to download

so users download ringtones, instead. But why would any iPhone users be going to Myxer when you can download ringtones for free or create your own with iTunes?

    I wonder...

Was this based on the browser versions that visited the sites? If so, can Android phones download ringtones directly onto the phone? You sure can't do that with an iPhone.
    Maybe that's why.

who really cares if iPhone owners surf for free ringtones. iPhone owners don't want to fill their superior device with useless c***. They know better, that's why they own an iPhone and not an android phone.

    Honestly

Honestly this makes sense for a few reasons. Firstly getting ringtones onto an iPhone isn't as straight forward especially for those with Windows. Secondly most people who are gonna end up doing that are gonna decided to make theirs I think. I don't know I make mine, but at the same time I know most iPhone users I know don't make their own ring tones.

    RE: Some story

Android has an application to create your own ringtones too. It's called Ringdroid and it's quite good. Allows you to create ringtones from mp3's. Why you would need to download a ringtone? Who knows. But if it's free, why not.

    Another useless statistic.

What? You mean like the 10,000 f*** apps, beer drinking apps, or bubble wrap popping apps available for the iPhone?

You clowns are so quick to point out the 100,000+ apps on the App Store but don't want to mention that 90% are c***.

    Mobile Entertainment?

How did downloads of ringtones and wallpaper morph into a chart for downloads of "mobile entertainment?"

Myxer is a litlle myxed up - the gap exists primarily between Myxer's ears.
