ATI intros Radeon E4690 MXM for embedded systems

Chipmaker AMD on Friday in Taiwan introduced the ATI Radeon E4690 Mobile PCI Express module (MXM) for graphics-intensive embedded systems. Compared to previous such products, the new graphics processor has three times the 3D graphics performance capability and doesn't rely on the CPU like usual integrated video. The E4690 MXM is meant for embedded applications such as arcade games, digital signs, image recognition, medical imaging and similar areas where performance has to be balanced by size.

The ATI Radeon E4690 MXM has 512MB of on-board GDDR3 memory, 320 shader processors, a large set of display output options and adjustable system clocks. The embedded chip has support for DirectX 10.1 and AMD's Unified Video Decoder 2. The device will otherwise play back H.264, VC-1 and MPEG-2 files, and has picture-in-picture support.

Outputs include two independent dual-link display controllers, DisplayPort, DVI/TMDS/HDMI and analog connections.

Pricing isn't mentioned, though the technology behind the chipset won't be available to the public outside of completely assembled computers and similar products.
