Lenovo still on track for Android phone

Lenovo today said (registration that its LePhone Android phone is still on track in spite of Google's controversial anti-censorship move in China. Officials at Lenovo still anticipate a release to China in May and also revealed that the touchscreen smartphone will reach other areas later in the year. Many of the apps will and interface will be tailored to the Chinese audience when it ships.

Fear of a LePhone delay was sparked after Google had already delayed two phones that were due to ship this week. The politically sensitive situation led the search firm to believe that a release in the current climate would hurt sales or Google's public image.

Lenovo was one of the first to launch an Android phone in China through its OPhone O1 but has generally been silent about follow-ups until this month. It nonetheless is pinning much of its hopes on smartphones and eventually expects phone shipments to outweigh those of PCs.
