Meant for small, medium-sized businesses

Synology has launched the DiskStation DS1010+, a new network-area storage system. The unit has five SATA/SSD drive bays by default, and is intended mainly for small- or medium-sized businesses. It can be scaled to use up to 3GB of RAM however, and as many as 10 bays via the DX510, due in March. Adding the 510 should double peak storage to 20TB.

Maximum read performance is rated at over 115MBps, while writes can run as fast as 109MBps. By default the unit has 1GB of DDR2 RAM, four USB ports and two gigabit Ethernet ports. Supported configurations include RAID 0, 1, 5, 5+Spare, 6 and JBOD. Mac clients must be using Mac OS X 10.3; a web interface allows access from iPhones and iPod touches.

Buyers must contact Synology for prices on pre-equipped or disk-free models.
