MS would not have WM7 for some until 2011
Microsoft is slated to talk about two versions of Windows Mobile at Mobile World Congress next month, those reputedly aware of the timetable said on Friday. Beyond releasing the interim Windows Mobile 6.6, which could add not just touch-ready buttons but support for capacitive touch, Microsoft would also set a date for when Windows Mobile 7 would be widely available. Wider availability would start in September and could result in many phones shipping that fall.
In its rush to get 7 released, however, Microsoft would only put out English and primary European language versions, according to DigiTimes. Many of the companies tapped to co-develop Windows Mobile 7 launch phones, including Acer, ASUS, HTC, LG, Samsung and Toshiba, wouldn't have the option of releasing phones in their home countries until early 2011.
The same sources also recap features leaked earlier for the new OS, suggesting that Zune, Xbox Live and Silverlight will all play major roles. Its browser and media playback will be its important highlights.
Most observers consider this Mobile World Congress critical for Microsoft as it needs to persuade both manufacturers and the public that Windows Mobile will keep up to date with its competitors. The lack of changes in Windows Mobile 6.5 has led to declining sales and in some cases to companies at least temporarily dropping Windows Mobile in favor of another OS, such as Motorola's Android-only release schedule for 2010.

Too little...
...too late.
If they leave it to compete on its merits alone, forget it-- its merits are years behind those of WinMo's competitors. Only way it will stick around is if Microsoft is gonna start paying people and companies to use it-- like they're doing with Bing, so they can brag about how popular it is.
