Nokia researchers demonstrate mobile radar

Nokia's Helsinki-based research center has shown off a mobile radar concept in a cellphone at an exhibition in Finland on Wednesday. The active radar sensor can measure speed and sense and measure movement, even when the device is covered by a piece of cloth. It will also measure the direction of movement of an approaching object and does so using electromagnetic waves, just like a real radar.

Applications for the technology, as the Nokia staffer demonstrates in the video below, could involve gesture control, with a simple raise of the hand upping the volume of music playback, with the reverse movement lowering music volumes. The feature could also be used at sporting events to determine a pitched ball's or a race car's speed, for example.

There is no word on if or when Nokia will bring this feature to its cellphones.
